JULY 2021 COVER STORY

PANDEMIC

Since the peak of the pandemic, many schools, businesses and govt facilities remain closed. Some are mere victims of this pandemic and will never reopen.

Frankly, the year 2020 could be tagged as a blur, nonexistent, or even erased subconsciously from many hearts and minds. Living through it was like a whirlwind, being swept up by nonstop crisis after crisis. Only to be thrust into an area of hopelessness as we witnessed so many leave this earth by the numbers. A domino-effect of tragedy and loss. But as Americans, we are strong; we face adversity with solutions and not “why us?”

Weathering each added tragedy and remaining hopeful, compassionate and resilient, we are stronger together.
We’ve seen nations come together for many causes and have witnessed justice amongst a heavily unbalanced society. This is proof that we’re not giving up nor in.

A year later, and many states have lifted restrictions and mandates - the masks have been thrown away by some that received a vaccinated shot or two.
Many entertainment venues are returning and travel is easing its way back into the fold.
While the coast seems clear, we’re definitely NOT out of the woods, people! Especially since there remains virus-related cases and deaths, everyday.
There are reports of issues surrounding the shots and many more inquiries on this “solution”, especially in the case of young adults and children. READ MORE...

Hello Team Life Remodeled,

As a parent, to say school has been challenging for my children since March of last year would be an understatement. I'm assuming I'm not alone in saying that for students, parents and teachers, participating in schooling during this pandemic, whether virtually, in-person or hybrid, has been overwhelming, frustrating, difficult, confusing...and a ton of other feelings.

Now, imagine yourself in this same circumstance, but add in the challenges of many DPSCD students and families, specifically those in the communities surrounding the DIS. With close to 80% of this community living at or below the poverty line, significant academic truancy (76% at Central High School prior to the pandemic), and low test scores, schooling in a COVID world has created yet another barrier for Detroit's students.

In order to address the widening opportunity gap, Life Remodeled has intentionally focused on youth programming over the last 6 months, and we've really hit a stride when it comes to our Safe Center for Online Learning at the DIS.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, we have 38 K-12 students coming to the DIS during the school day to participate in this program. We're providing students a safe and socially-distanced space where they can come and work on their homework while we provide laptops, wifi, and caring adults who can help them navigate virtual learning. Our volunteers are providing homework help and technical assistance, but they're also balancing study time with play time in the DIS arcade, gym and library. Through this program and a partnership with Cleary University and Key's Grace Food Service, we're also able to provide each student with breakfast, lunch and an evening snack. Finally, in addition to the SCOL, we're offering even more academic support through tutoring on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

We know that school will continue to be a struggle for many students, during the pandemic and after, and we're committed, alongside our DIS tenants, to continue pouring support into all of the students in this community with the goal of making Durfee Elementary-Middle School, located next door to the DIS, the most improved DPSCD school by 2025. Thanks to all of YOU for your support of Life Remodeled and your commitment to creating opportunity for all, and I'm excited to keep you up to date on our progress and future success!

TOGETHER w/ YOU,
